Goals VS Outcomes. Why a reframe here could make all the difference.  

When you meet with your clients, do you talk about goals?

Do you lead with questions like “What is your employment goal?”

Setting goals is an everyday occurrence.

We set big and little goals all the time. But often, they aren’t labelled as goals in our mind, as they are easy to achieve.

For example, ‘I need to be at work today by 7.45 am to prepare for my early morning meeting.’ When you arrive at work and are prepared for your meeting, you feel proud of yourself. Tick – goal met!

You just may not have labelled this a goal in your mind.

Setting goals might feel challenging for some clients, particularly those experiencing long-term unemployment.

As a job coach, you and your clients should be on the same page in your understanding of what a goal is.

An easy way to do this is to ask, “I’m curious, what is your definition of a goal?”

Listen carefully to their response. What words are they using? You need to incorporate their words when setting goals. A goal that doesn’t feel right, sound right or look right to a person will not be achieved.

The word goal may feel very big for some of your clients. It might not be a word they connect with, or that resonates deeply with them.

If your clients associate the word goal with something large or hard to reach, you could try reframing and using the word outcome instead. Test this with them to see if the word outcome feels different – it may feel smaller and easier to achieve.

A goal or outcome should have values aligned with them. If we don’t align our values to the goal or outcome, they can feel empty.

By using specific coaching questions, you can discover how your clients’ goals align with their values. Simple questions like “What would you like to focus on today?” allow your clients to take small steps forward.
