Self-Care is not Selfish

Self-Care is not Selfish

It can be easy to feel guilty about practising self-care. By its very nature, self-care means putting ourselves first, but when we work in an industry like employment services it’s incredibly hard not to put the people we are there to serve, our clients, first. We are so often trying to fill other people’s cups, that our own is regularly left empty.

The word “self” can have a negative association because it seems to be only about the individual. But if we expand our view of the word “self” beyond the individual to include all the people in our lives: the people we work with, our families and our communities it makes valuing self-care so much easier. In other words, if we practise self-care, we look after so much more than ourselves.

Self-care isn’t self-indulgence; it’s not a guilty pleasure or something that gives us instant gratification. It’s an essential part of holistic wellness and is a preventative measure that can help you overcome the stresses of work and life.

There are several elements of life that can improve our overall wellbeing, including:

  • Focusing on work that we really enjoy, be it paid or unpaid
  • Looking after our physical selves with good food, regular exercise and quality sleep
  • Increasing our learning and expanding our knowledge
  • Recognising the impact of our emotions and managing them
  • Living our values, showing care, compassion and kindness
  • Spending quality time with friends, family and community

So, spend some time over the next week thinking about the things you already do to practise self-care and make sure that you feel really good about it. Making a positive association with your self-care activities will give you confidence to build a strong self-care plan.

We will explore more of these over the coming weeks as part of our self-care series throughout November and December.
